| Over the past numbers of years members of
the Glens of Antrim Historical Society having been highlighting the number of derelict rural
houses throughout the Glens and asking the Committee if these could
be documented before they disappear for good.
The changing face of agriculture and the
amalgamation of smallholdings has left many vacant houses across
the Glens. After a lot of discussion it was decided that to try to document the history of
all these individual properties would
be an impossible task. From extensive consultations with both members and
other interested bodies, it was decided to look at clusters of
houses found throughout the Glens. These are sometimes referred to as clachans.
So the title Clachan Project was chosen for the study.
The Society approached the Heritage Lottery Fund
for finance for this project and have successfully secured a
package which will enable an extensive study of clachans in the
Glens to take place.
