| The Project, financed partly by the
Heritage Lottery Fund, will run from March 2004 to March
2007. The work will be divided into three stages.
Stage 1
A survey of the nine Glens and Rathlin to identify any
clusters within the Glens which might have been clachans -
classify them as being either inhabited or deserted and in
various states of ruin - map their location within the
Glens - photograph each house within the clachan and
provide basic details on whether it is, or was, one or two
storey, and the materials used in the construction of the
roof, walls, etc.
Stage 2
A further study of the architectural aspects of the buildings
in the clachans.
A detailed look at the families who inhabited the
clachans from the middle of the nineteenth century to more
recent times looking at how they were related – why some
families survived - why some disappeared – new families
that moved into the clachan, etc.
Everyday life and work in the clachans – looking at
occupations, farming, school, entertainment, etc. –
including the degree of change or continuity that took
place in these aspects of life from the later nineteenth
century onwards.
Stage 3

detail.
