The Clachan Schools Project was supported by The Heritage Lottery Fund and some elements e.g. the 'Kids and Kulture' workshops and costumes, by The Causeway Coast and Glens Heritage Trust.

Aims & Outcomes

An important aim of The Glens of Antrim Historical Society is to conserve and preserve the cultural heritage of the Glens amongst the general public and especially the youth. The Clachan Schools project was designed to offer teachers and children a meaningful context through which pupils could acquire and practise a variety of curricular skills while gaining a knowledge of their local area now and in the past.

Samples of schools' work arising from the project are included in this section of the Clachan Project website. Further outputs have been the stand-alone 'Clachan Kids' Website' which is a ready-made project for upper Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 pupils, containing worksheet material and related background reading, photographs, video material and a substantial teachers' section. Another output, the book 'How It Used To Be' , in the childrens' own words, covers some aspects of the work done by the schools which took part in the project and includes many examples of stories collected and retold by the children.

The links on the right of the page will explain how the schools tackled this project and provide examples of the work children have completed. As well as studying the clachans themselves, the children have explored connected themes such as 'emigration' and the experience of living in a clachan long ago.

Some of the events which have taken place as part of the schools' programme have been recorded and are available to view on the 'On-line Videos' section of the website, which you can choose from the menu on the left.
