Drama Workshop – An American Wake

During the Heart of the Glens Festival 2006 the Clachan Project for schools was privileged to provide a Drama Workshop for 17 children in conjunction with the Big Telly Theatre Company.

The children were introduced to some ‘ice-breaker’ games, which enabled them to learn something about each other and succeeded in bonding the group.

The tutor, Nicky Doherty, then used a variety of techniques to build up the children’s knowledge of the past, emigration and the phenomena of the ‘American Wake’.

These techniques included ‘freeze-framing’, making a tableau as if for a family photograph and ‘hot-seating’ characters.

It was interesting to watch Nicky bring out latent talent as the two-day course progressed.

As a finale to the course, the children gave a performance for family, friends and anyone else who cared to attend. Feed-back from the children showed that they thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience.

The Glens of Antrim Historical Society Clachan Project would like to thank Causeway Heritage Trust for their support and attendance.
