I have been told that Henry McNeill (1836-1904), who was a well-known pioneer of tourism in Ireland with his hotel in Larne (McNeill's Hotel), Garron Tower etc, had a sister who married a man with the second name O'Boyle and my husband's family are descended from this McNeill / O'Boyle couple.
However, to date, I cannot find a sister of this Henry McNeill who maried O'Boyle.
I bought "Old Families of Larne & District". From this it looks like Henry's parents were Alexander and Ann and he had a brother Daniel and sister Ann (married Legg). But no sign of any O'Boyle link!
The McNeill / O'Boyle couple supposedly had a son called Henry McNeill. Henry McNeill then married Sarah McAlister and had children: Henry, Charles, Rose, Maggie, Cissie, Kathleen and Frances.
My husband's grandmother was Rose O'Boyle. She was born somewhere in Antrim, married Joseph Smyth, and died in Dublin in 1977.
Thanks in advance for any advice anyone can offer,
Al |

Did your Mary J McNeill marry O'Boyle?
I know a Charles O'Boyle married Mary J McNeill in 1888, but I haven't been able to connect with this Charles O'Boyle myself yet. |

My name is Kevin Craig from Ohio, USA. My grandfather was John Craig. Great grandfather was Patrick Craig. Great grandmother was Ellen (Hunter) Craig. All of them were from Glenarm, Gartford area of Co. Antrim. Great Grandfather Patrick Craig's parents were Henry Craig and Catherine (O'Boyle) Craig. Great Grandmother Ellen (Hunter) Craig's parents were John Hunter and possibly....Ellen Hunter. Not sure if Ellen's mother was really Ellen. Patrick Craig (RC) married Ellen Hunter in 1879 at Ballymena in the Parish of Kirkinriola at West Church Presbyterian Church. They had a son, John, my grandfather, in 1880. The three of them moved to East Liverpool, Ohio in 1881. When I visited Glenarm in May 2009, the PostMaster told me I stuck an amazing resemblence to a Neil Hunter , from the area. I feel in love with my grandfather's homeland. Any connection to the Craigs, Hunters or O'Boyle's would be very welcome. Kind Regards, Kevin Craig Cleveland, Ohio, USA |

Hello, Mrs. Smyth. I believe that I am a relative. I noted that your posting is from 2007 but I just found this site. I met Rose Smyth in 1970 when I visited Dublin. She was my father's first cousin. My dad was Walter O'Boyle, son of James O'Boyle and Mary Ellen Lavelle. James was the son of Charles O'Boyle and Margaret McNeill. Margaret would have been Henry's sister. I believe Rose's father would have been Henry O'Boyle. Am I correct in that assumption?
Anyway, I knew that Rose would have passed away but I found her to be a delightful woman. We stayed with her in Dun Laoghaire and she took us on a taxi ride around the countryside! It was so good to connect with some close relatives. I'd love to discuss this with you further, if you would like. I believe that my grandfather, James, was the eldest of Charles and Margaret's children, or one of the eldest. I have been able to trace quite a bit of information but am always looking for more.
I believe that James returned to Ireland once or twice--perhaps after his mother died. But, he and my grandmother raised 6 children (they had 9 but 3 died young) and they farmed a large tract of land in Kalispell, Montana. So, I believe that they had a good life.
Let me know if you're interested in connecting.

Hi asmyth, rather belated reply, but I have two records involving a Mary Jane McNeill. She was a godparent to my great aunt Catherine McNeill in 1884 with Neil McNeill. In 1881 Mary Jane, possibly the same one, was a witness with John McKinty, at the marriage of Mary McNeill to John Conway. Mary McNeill's parents were Dan McNeill and Mary Ann McKay from Curragh. Possibly this was the same Mary Jane who married Charles O'Boyle in 1888, the time frame seems appropriate. I would be interested in knowing what info you have on her. Innisfayle |

| Hi
Not sure if you might be related to us. Don't have much time at the moment to give you a detailed reply. But Charles O'Boyle was my Great Grandfather. He married Henry McNeill's sister and had Kathleen, Annie & Jean (not sure if more). Kathleen is my Mother's Mother who married Jack Callaghan who had children, Peter, Mary, Gerry, Sean, Charlie and Kathleen (Brigid and Ownie died).
I am Kathleen's daughter and we have a large extened family.

Hi Jasjac42,
I'm not sure you have the right connection. I have the details of the children of Charles O'Boyle and Margaret McNeill and they don't seem to match what you say. There is an Anne, first born, but no Kathleen(tho' there is a Catherine) nor Jean. There are 12 children all together. I got some of my info from the Glenarm records and the rest from Kathy O'Boyle who posted on this site last year.
I can let you have the details if you contact me on [email protected]

Hi folks. I'm joining this conversation rather late, but I'm connected through the 'Legg' connection. I've been told that the Legg family were connected to the Garvey family who owned public houses in the area at that time. There was also a Lake connection which took the family to Belfast and eventually to Donegal. Does anyone know anything about any of these families?
