Hi ,my name is William Spence Kitson and I live in Queensland Australia.I have just received my GGGrandfathers death notice .His name was Robert Spence ,his farm was Rosebrook in the Parish of Carmacmoin Ahoghill. He died 16 Dec 1879.The notice said that he was to be buried in the family burying ground Ahoghill.I suspect that it may have been on his farm. I am looking for a person who is familiar with grave sites in the Ahoghill area.Any assistance would be appreciated. Cheers Bill |

Hello Bill I can't help you re gravesites but may l ask how you came about the death notice of your GGGrandad Robert Spence and the family farm information? My GGGGrandad William Spence was a farmer, l believe in the Ahoghill area. His son Robert Spence's marriage certificate in 1884 says his 'home' townland was Tullaghgarley which is near Ahoghill. Regards Debbie

Hi Debbie, nice to make contact, first I got a copy of Roberts will from proni, then with the date of death I was able to get the North Eastern Education and Library in Ballymena to look up the Belfast Newsletter for the notice.I no longer believe he is buried on the farm but in one of the 3 Presbyterian Church graveyards in Ahoghill.
Robert had a brother William farming beside him at Ahoghill in the Griffith Valuations of the 1850s.I would like to think that it is the same William you are chasing,as I have done a lot of work on that William. He was born abt 1808,died1863 at Ahoghill had children Thomas,James,William Robert,Courtenay,Sarah, dont know their birth dates?.William's wife was Hester?
So if you have any of these names, then I can give you what I have on that family.
Cheers Bill

Hello Bill 'My' William Spence was married to a Sarah McKean/McKeen. However, she did die after 1858 and prior 1867 per a marriage certificate of one of her sons. If l am to believe the other marriage certificates, 'my' William Spence passed away between 1879 and 1891.So he could have married again. The children l am aware of is William 1846, Robert 1857 and Joseph 1858. Funny that 'your' William ahd a daughter Sarah !!. I guess l will have to check out Proni. These children also have a cousin William born 1861 Co.Down but l suspect they are cousins once removed as their fathers are William Spence. One a farmer and the cousins father was a milkman. The cousin married in Shankill. So if 'your' William Spence died 1863, then we are not the same family but l am only going by the sons marriage certificates that don't state whether parents deceased. Sometimes this is the case and its so frustrating!!
Regards Debbie

Hi Bill I read with interest your Spence info. and correspondance with another Debbie. I too have Spences from Ahoghill in the 19th C who moved to both the States and Australia - and were called Robert, James, WIlliam - common names in Co Antrim!! A Robert McKane went to Australia to visit an Aunt and Uncle Robert and Elizabeth Spence and stayed and married their daughter Agnes. Robert Spence's parents were Robert and Jane Spence. I am sure that even if not directly connected there must be a relationship somewhere. Ahoghill was very small and with many children in each family there were many connections around. Debbie |

Hello Debbie Nice to hear from another fellow Spence in the Ahoghill area. One other item l forgot to mention was that my William Spence of whom married Sarah McKean/McKane, was a watch and clockmaker according to most of the sons marriage certificates and a farmer on another marriage cert. So if you do come across this information, i'd be glad to hear from you. Kind regards Debbie |
