does anyone have any info on scullions from glenravel? in particular looking for anything on robert scullion b.1864, married to sarah johnston. he was stationmaster at parkmore according to his marriage certificate. his father was john scullion. does anyone know where exactly the stationmasters house at parkmore would have been situated or has anyone any info or photos on the railway in that area?

Thank you so much - we have been away for a few days, I will delve into this tomorrow.

I assume that the station masters house was the large red brick building sadly now long gone. It was close to the main road at Parkmore fork, where the main Cushendall to Ballymena road joins the Glenarriffe Road. There are lots of records concerning the parkmore railway in various local books. There are still Scullions in Glenravel so I'll alert them to your enquiry unless others who will no doubt be reading this may be able to assist you more. try a Google search of parkmore railway and you will at leats get some old and recent photos.. good luck.

My grandfather was born around 1875 in Glenravel, his name was James Scullion and he had brothers called Patrick and John,( John married but had no children) and twin sisters Margaret and Mary, also a sister Susannah. One of his twin sisters was a Mrs. Mary Birt, but Maggie never married, and Susannah married PaddyMcCann.
Most of the Scullions in Glenravel now are descended from this James and Patrick, their father was Michael, (born around 1840) Michael had a brother Patrick married to McGowan, lived at Crooknahai, and I think Patrick had a daughter who married McCurley from the Braid or Crebilly and 4 sons who went to Australia and Scotland.
These Scullions were supposed( not definite) to have come to Glenravel from somewhere in Armagh after Orange riots in 1833, and settled in Crooknahai, near where Henry McAteer used to live. Their father was possibly called John, possibly born around 1810, his wife was maybe Peggy Carey, but I don't know anything of John's siblings, maybe he came by himself from Armagh as a young man?
But I don't think Robert could have been the same family, ie a nephew ( changed this jan.30th, originally wrote brother, wrong.)of Michael and Patrick as I think I would have heard of the name, and they all appeared to be farmers more or less in the area where they still live. But I do remember seeing the name John Scullion in a ledger as a worker on the railway or the mines, in the display centre up in Glenariffe forest park. Apparently many workers came to the area from all around at that time.
There was one other family of Scullions who I think were in Glenravel before my(poss.) great great grandfather John Scullion, so we were told, ie that we weren't related, but most of them emigrated, the last of that name grew up in the parish but now lives elsewhere, possibly he would know of a Robert. If you come across the name Jeremiah Scullion, he belongs to this different family, and there was a John in land records with Jeremiah in the last century. Sorry this is not more help but at least it might fill in some gaps and close off false trails! All this information is open to correction or fine tuning of course, as it is "word of mouth" not from research records etc...I would be glad of any more details.

many thanks for this info. the only details i have are john scullion born at parkmore 1893 to robert[stationmaster] and sarah johnston of tuftarney. they were married at kirkinriola pres.24/05/ 1892. their next son was born at connor, then the rest in larne where robert was still a railway employee. roberts parents were john scullion and jane sterling of cargan. as i could only locate one john at this time i had presumed him to be a brother of your james but this may not now be the case. i have been in contact with a lady in the usa who is descended from susan mccann. she had some work carried out by the ulster historical society who said that jeremiah was a brother to james, patrick, susan etc. it can be sooo confusing! would really love to find out more on my wifes family. any info you have will be greatly appreciated, word of mouth or whatever!

I sent a reply yesterday, but it doesn't seem to have got through, sorry about that.
Re the" lady in the US", who has now replied to me in the McCanns of Dungonnel" forum:
Susannah McCann nee Scullion is not the same Susan McCann nee Scullion who emigrated to the US in the 1860s. Susan belongs to the "Jeremiah" Scullions, whereas Susannah was born around 1867 and died around 1963 in Glenravel, and was the "Armagh" Scullions. I am only using "Armagh" and "Jeremiah" as convenient labels, hope no one minds.
The "last of the family" of the Jeremiah Sculions who no longer lives in Glenravel was the son of Patrick, so there are Patricks (and James) in both families.
I have fowarded Susan Gingras' information to relatives of her great great grandfather(please see" McCanns of Dungonnel" in this forum, hopefully they will eventually have some family details for her.
Sorry my last reply didn't get to you, I will look up some copies of old church records which I have and check all Scullion information in them from early 1800s...though they are sparse for this period.
Good luck in the meantime!

Do you have any information on the decedants of Jeremiah?  I know Patrick was the oldest child, but I have no information on any of his children, or other grandchildren of Jeremiah.   I do know that Jeremiah's daughter Catherine was a nun, and became the Mother Superior of the Bon Secours convent in Baltimore, Maryland, USA

Thanks,
Susan Gingras

Hello Susan, sorry I haven't had time yet to look at the portions of photocopied Baptism records, tho will very soon. What I know about Jeremiah's descendants, going backwards from the present day;

...Patrick, prob. born 1910-1920, deceased, had 4 children,(roughly aged between 45-60) none of whom live in Glenravel but I might be able to contact 1 of them eventually. His sister Elizabeth, dec'd, married with one son now living in England. His other sister Jane unmarried and deceased. There could have been other siblings of Patrick, there is something about a James in my memory, and there were definitely quite close relatives in America because as a child/teenager about 45 years ago, I saw them out for walks and was told they were cousins, on the Scullion side, on holiday from America, of the 4 children mentioned above who now no longer live in Glenravel. Going backwards from there ie Patrick's parents prob. born around 1870 approx....I cannot help you at this stage, I am sorry, but will make enquiries as I have a probable location for one of Patrick's daughters, but I now live in Perth, Australia, so it might take a little while...tho I visit N.Ireland regularly and have family there. Best wishes in the meantime..I have added an entry in the McCann section also today. I will also look in those records for info about John Scullion belonging to sandscull above, I haven't forgotten about you! My lovely aunt in Glenravel (nee Scullion) was 92 this year so I will ask there also, she has a very good memory, but has always said she didn't take much interest, so we will see!

I have been through my box of stuff today (copies of old Parish records etc) and will send you much more detail after Xmas, ie inside a week hopefully. I have collected various items over the years and will be happy to share it, tho it may not end up being much help, we will see. I have asked  a friend for help with the phone no. of one of the "Jeremiah" Scullions and if and when I talk to this family I will have more information.
