I’ve just come across your society’s site and I find it to very interesting and well put-together. Thank you. I read with interest several of the forum entries and the oral histories. The interview with Annie McKillop especially intrigued me, which has prompted me to write.
I’ve long believed that my Monaghan and McKeegan ancestors have a connection to Antrim yet I’m unable to find anything conclusive.
Only by “word-of-mouth”, my great grandparents are John Monaghan (b: ~1828) and Eliza O’Neill (b ~1832). It’s unclear whether they were born, married or died in Ireland or Scotland. I believe their children were John, Edward, Margaret, Patrick and Charles. John married Rose McCart and had a daughter Elizabeth b:~1881 who married P. Murphy; Edward married Susan O’Reilly (b: 1873),moved to California, USA and had 7 children; Margaret (b: 1864, married John McQuillan (b:1863) and had 6 children; Patrick died young; Charles (b:~1869-71) emigrated to NY, USA.
Charles was my grandfather and he married two different Catherine McKeegan’s, both were born in NY and are believed to be cousins. One Catherine’s (Kitty) parents were Patrick McKeegan (b:~1850) and Catherine ((Kitty/Kate) Murray (b: 1854). The other Catherine’s parents were John McKeegan b:1843 and Bridget McCurry b:1847. I’m hoping to determine whether John & Patrick McKeegan were brothers. Possible parents for either or both of them are James McKeegan and Mary McCambridge.
I apologize if I’m providing too much detail for this forum, but if anyone can provide clues to my family search, I’d be appreciative. Sincerely, Paul Monaghan NY, USA
