White, McPherson

My great-grandparents were John White, b. 1849, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, and Isabel McPherson, b. 1851, County Antrim. They married in Ballycastle in December, 1881. Their children were born in Ballytoy or Ballycastle: Ella, John, Samuel, Mary, and Belle. John emigrated ca. 1889-1890 to Iowa, USA, to farm with his "maternal uncle [this relationship according to family tradition]" Hector McCaughan. Hector had a sister named Margaret McCaughan who married a Benton in IA. John sent for his family, and they emigrated to Iowa, USA, in 1893. My grandmother, Ida Mae White, is the only child of the family born in Iowa. Would anybody have any information about this family?

John & Isabella’s marriage was registered in Ballycastle Oct – Dec 1881 Volume 1, page 97. His father was James White, hers was Samuel M’Pherson.

If you get a copy of their marriage cert, it should give you their townlands (addresses) which may enable you to trace the families in Griffiths Valuation and elsewhere. Tradition was to marry in the bride’s church so wherever that was (and it will be on the marriage cert) may be the place to look for Isabella’s birth and siblings.

Thank you so much. How may I obtain a copy of their marriage certificate?

The originals of Irish BDM certs are not viewable on line. There are some pay to view sites where you get transcripts but they don’t all have all the details eg addresses and witnesses, so if you want to see the full details on the certificate you have to order a copy. I use GRO Roscommon because they offer a photocopy option, which is cheaper than a full formal certificate, and it eliminates the possibility of transcription errors. Provided you give them accurate information, and they don’t have to do any searching, a photocopy only costs €4.

Go to the GRO Roscommon website: www.groireland.ie/  Download the application forms you need, and fill them in with the information you have, including the location, year, quarter (if there is one shown), Volume & page number. Don’t worry if you have to leave some boxes blank, eg PPS number. Be sure to tick the box marked photocopy. You then either fax or post the forms off to them (there is no e-mail option for certs pre 1.1.1922 or if you are just ordering a photocopy). Their turnaround time is 7 to 10 days plus however long the post takes.
